I must say that it seems to me like a great deal of contemporary fantasy is either gratuitous angst, cringe-worthy remixes of hackneyed clichés or essentially just…porn with magic. I’ve reached the point where I’m reluctant to open a modern fantasy book for fear of being scarred yet again.

This makes “Crown of Angels” an incredibly welcome breath of fresh air.

There’s actually a story, and it’s an excellent story with a surprising amount of profundity. It seemed like I never knew what was going to happen next. And the main character is a believable, layered female protagonist who I found endearing.

As “Crown of Angels” deals with war, there’s some gore and quite a bit of violence, but none of it is sexual in nature. It was spice-free as well, which I, for one, appreciated.

I found “Crown of Angels” to be a refreshing and exciting story and it was clear the author put a great deal of thought and heart into it. I look forward to reading others in the series!
