The following review was posted on Amazon today, so a huge thank you to Greg H, Southampton, UK for taking the time to write and post the following review:
“Nemo’s Fury 3: Fort Death” delivers a thrilling dive into a rich, steampunk world brimming with creativity and engaging character development. The book’s strength lies in its ability to weave an imaginative setting that pulls readers deep into an alternate Victorian-era filled with mechanical wonders and vehicle battles. The depth of the world-building is exceptional, with intricate details that make the world feel alive and expansive, offering a sense of adventure and discovery at every turn. It’s such a grandiose effort that at times I could feel the author’s challenge in weaving it all together. There are times when this strain shows in the structure of the prose, but I was able to overlook it and feel the energy of the worldview.
The character development in Nemo’s Fury 3 is another highlight. Players are given the opportunity to not only shape their character’s decisions but also to see their comrades grow and evolve, each with their own mindset and motivations.
Another notable strength of the book is its length. Unlike many gamebooks that feel rushed or too short, “Nemo’s Fury 3” provides a satisfying length of adventure. The story unfolds at a pace that allows for exploration without feeling dragged out, offering readers the chance to thoroughly immerse themselves in the steampunk universe.
However, no book is perfect. One of the more noticeable issues here is the – occasional – confusing game mechanics. The rules complexity here lies somewhere between Fighting Fantasy books and earlier versions of Dungeons and Dragons. If readers have no experience with the latter, they will need to dwell on the rules for longer than usual before getting started. One other minor issue is that one certain stat takes a great prevalence over others in the game, meaning if that stat alone is low, the game can be short.
Overall, “Nemo’s Fury 3” is a captivating addition to the steampunk genre, offering a richly detailed world and compelling character arcs played out in a world so imaginative I’d actually really like to see comics, graphic novels or other media produced within its world. Fans of gamebooks and steampunk alike will find much to enjoy, especially those who appreciate a longer, immersive adventure.
